ZICS!

Our more eagle eyed followers will remember reading a post earlier in the year in which we stated our resolution to stop being the biggest pikers in zinedom and attend as many zine fairs as possible in 2014. We accordingly pencilled Brisbane’s Zine and Indie Comics Emporium into our diary, then wrote over the pencil in Biro – yes, Biro. Such was our determination to attend. You’ve guessed by now that I’m writing this in way of apology – turns out we can’t make ZICS this year. But we admire the huge collective effort that them Brisbane folks put into it. Hopefully we’ll make it next time, and hopefully YOU can make it this time! Here’s a blurb they sent us, to inspire you:

“Now in its second year, The Zine and Independent Comic Symposium, or ZICS, is a three day event run in the last weekend of August (29th-31st). Held less than 100m away from the Culture Centre Bus Station, The Edge will once again play host to this unique experience.

Featuring workshops, discussion panels, live music, and a space for zine and comic artists to present their work, this event had over 2000 people last time, and this year is on track to be even bigger! The enthusiastic reception of ZICS last year proved that Brisbane is hungry for more events like this, and we’re ready to give it to them!

The event kicks off on Friday night with a ticketed launch event with competitions, guest speakers, an affordable bar, and live music to help kick off the event in style!

The rest of the weekend will be free entry to the public, and there will be plenty of activities to get involved with. There will be workshops on topics like ‘intro to screenprinting’, plus engaging panel conversations covering a range of topics from ‘representation in the medium’ to ‘how to pay the bills’. And, there will be the Comic and Zine marketplace, where local and interstate creators will be distributing and trade their works.

ZICS is a not for profit community collective, all run by passionate volunteers. ZICS has launched a Pozible campaign to help cover costs, which can be viewed at http://www.pozible.com/zics14, so come and get your tickets now! More info at https://www.facebook.com/ZICSymposium”

Canberra zine fair et al

Hey look, we changed the look of our website! We’re still fiddling around with it, making it easier to read and stuff. In case you’re worried we’ve gone ultra minimalist, we are gonna add some pictures n stuff eventually. Anyway, just a quick post to say thanks to everyone who came and said hi and bought zines from us at the zine fair in Canberra last Saturday. Special thanks, of course, to Nat and Chiara for organising it! It was way fun.

More soon, including some new zines…

New zines, just added!

Greetings!

I did a bunch of cleaning up on the site last night, adding long neglected descriptions, removing a few things we’ve sold out of without realising, marking zines that we’re down to the last copy of. I also updated the international postage rates (Australia Post have removed one weight category for posting international letters, so letters between 51-250g are now all one weight category, making it pretty expensive for post that is just slightly over 50g. Sorry! Blame Australia Post.)

Also I made a very important update to our submissions page which I will elaborate on here: we are currently not accepting submissions. We don’t know if this will be permanent or not, but we’ve found that we really struggle to cope with the number of submissions we get. Often we wind up feeling guilty about either not replying to people in a timely manner or having to tell people that we don’t think their zine’s what we’re after or caving in and stocking things that we think are good but not really our style. It’s hard to say this stuff without coming off all narky there’s-sooo-many-lame-zines-out-there-man, and that’s not what we think at all. We’re so grateful to everyone who sends us their stuff and to everyone whose zines we’ve stocked. I was looking at our folder of paid invoices/consignments last night and it’s nearly two inches thick! That’s a lot of zines. One day I might actually try to calculate just how many we’ve sold on behalf of how many zinesters. We do honestly believe that all zine making should be encouraged and supported, we just don’t have time and energy to stock every single zine we get sent. So we’ve decided that it would be easier for us to approach the zine makers whose stuff we want to stock rather than wait for them to send us submissions. In fact, that is pretty much how we’ve always run things, anyway. We’re aware that we’ll probably miss out on a lot of real gems by closing submissions, but that’s a sacrifice we’re prepared to make for the sake of having a slightly less action packed PO Box. I never thought I’d reach the day that I’d actually wish for less mail! But really, we still want to get mail but we want real mail, you know, letters from people who’ve read our zines or zines that we stock and want to say hello. We don’t get those kind of letters much any more. Maybe you would like to write us one?

All that said, we have a STACK of great zines ready to add to the site, including a new issue of Jerk Store, a new one from Bertievan (author of Stuffed Turtles and Mum liked her tea…), The Wolves at the Door, Taking Things Too Far and others, so check back over the next couple of weeks for updates!

xEmma

EDIT

I forgot to mention that there’s another really awesome looking distro operating in Australia! They’re called Fox and Owl and they’ve only been around for a couple of months but they already have a really great catalogue of well selected (mostly political/personal) zines, badges, patches, music on cassette and more. They’re run by Tee (Sour Puss) outta Brisbane, to whom we send props and best wishes. Check it out!

UPDATES, INEVITABLE BADGE SPIN OFF ETC…

Descriptions have been added for the issues of Brainscan and Jerk Store that were put up a few weeks ago. More descriptions to come, and more zines: we have issues of Kiss Off, I am Very Busy and Important and Hole in the Ground to add over the next week or so.

We also tweaked the site a bit a couple of weeks ago, updating the international postage prices and moving all the music/video stuff to one page to make room for our new badge page! Yes, we have taken the inevitable next step in zine distrodom and now stock custom-made badges (or buttons, according to what part of the world you’re in.) We bought a 2.5cm/1 inch badge maker a little while ago and have made a few sets of badges inspired by some of the ‘deaccessioned’ library books we’ve collected over the years. We’ll be adding other stuff to the badge page as we go along, including bulk ordering options, but if you have any badge related enquiries in the meantime, just get in touch.
